Remote First Aid

Overview:

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid to casualty in a remote and/or isolated situation.

Units of Competency:

  • HTLFA301B Apply First Aid

  • HLTFA302A Provide first aid in remote situation

Course Content:

  • Prepare to respond to emergency in a remote situation

  • Provide first aid in a remote situation

  • Work in conjunction with medical and emergency services support

  • Evaluate the incident

Duration:

Option 1:  32 hours (4 days) classroom training and assessment for participants who do not

               hold a current first aid certificate

Option 2:  Mixed mode – 22 hours (3 days) classroom training and assessment combined with

              completion of a workbook for participants who do not hold a current first aid

              certificate.

Option 3:  16 hours (2 days) classroom training and assessment for holders of current first aid

               certificate.

Who Should Attend:

This unit is appropriate for those undertaking first aid work in remote or isolated workplace situations and first aiders who have an interest in furthering their first aid skills and those people who travel in remote situations.

Co / Pre-Requisites:

  • HTLFA301B Apply First Aid

  • Students must be 16 years or older

Course Support Materials Provided:

  • Course notes

  • First aid manual

Training Methods:  

The course will be presented by group discussion, role plays, video, syndicate exercise, action plan development, case studies, practical exercises, lecture and report writing. The course is interactive and practical. 

 

Course Assessment:

The assessment criteria for this course will be based on both informal and formal processes (as per  Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) requirements for competency based training).

The assessment methods used during the course will be:

  • Multiple choice quiz

  • Progressive practical assessment

  • Outdoor assessment activity

  • HLTFA302A Provide first aid in remote situation

Recertification:

Legislative approval valid for 3 years from the completion date. Annual refreshers recommended to maintain current CPR and advanced skills.

Notes:

  • Due to the practical components of the course, participants are advised to wear comfortable casual attire. Appropriate outdoor/remote area clothing it to be worn for the outdoor activities.

  • There is an outdoor exercise as part of this course
